Non-Snow based activities


Depending on the season, the choice of activities and places to visit is enormous. We have included some links, though many of these may be in French language only. As we find more, we’ll add them to the page.


Arapaho

These are off-road scooters. From Luchon or elsewhere nearby, you are taken to the top of a mountain and descend on these tough machines, with a guide. Good fun and no experience needed. Link here

Bowls (Petanque)

There is a Boulodrome in Saint Béat.

 

Bridge

Bungee Jumping

Off a bridge (East of Toulouse) or off a rock at the entrance to a Cave (70metres) at Le Mas d'Azil (about 90mins drive). Link here


Cycling

This is an area famed for its cycling. The Tour de France normally passes nearby each year and there are numerous clubs and cycling events in the area. In addition, there are plenty of bike hire shops - one is just in the village.


Fishing

Trout fishing is available at the Lac de Géry or the rivers Garonne or Pique. There is a shop selling essentials and permits in nearby Saint Béat. Instructors are available locally too.


Flying/Gliding

There are small airfields near Saint Gaudens and another in Luchon. Lessons and experience flights can be arranged. Link here


Golf

There is a golf club in Luchon with 9 holes. Link here


Horse riding

There are numerous stables and horse riding centres in the area. On request, we can provide a list.


Karting

There is a karting centre in Soumalou, just West of Pau - about one hour's drive. Karting d'Espoey Link Here . There's another near Lourdes Link here

 

Kayaking

Available at the Lac de Géry and the company H2O Vives has a base there too to canoe along the Garonne. Link here


Mountain Biking

The area has loads of designated mountain biking routes (VTT) at various levels. Mountain bikes may be hired by the half-day, day or week. Guides are also available if required. Details here


Parascending

No, you don't just jump of a mountain with a parachute on your back! It's a tandem rig, so you do jump off, but with an expert attached behind you. Exhilarating, with wonderful views. Typically, you land in the middle of Luchon. Link Here or Here


Potholing

Expert guides take groups down into the mountains, for those unfazed by claustrophobia. Link Here


Rafting

The River Garonne is a major base for white-water rafting. There is a centre at the Lac de Géry, just opposite the house. In high Summer, the rafting tends to take place on the same river, but across the border in Spain, where the sluices of a hydro-electric dam are opened to a timetable, producing lively water down below. Rambling/Walking

There are lots of designated walks of varying degrees of difficulty to visit mountain-top lakes, waterfalls forests and exceptional views. Local shops sell maps and qualified mountain guides are available too.


Swimming

There is an outdoor municipal pool in Saint Béat and another in Luchon, with sunbathing area.


Thermal Spas

Luchon was originally known by the Romans for its thermal spa. Nowadays, the spa is in a modern building and provides a very wide range of treatments as well as a vaporium (thermally heated caves) Link Here

 

There are other spas nearby. A new one in Les (Spain), just over the border (20 mins drive).

Tennis
